Naked City
[ author: weegee ]
Weegee is, in my mind, of the most notable photographers of New York's underbelly. Working the beat in the 40's and 50's, Weegee cruised the streets in his '38 Chevy, listening to his police scanner in a plot to beat the cops to the scene of the crime. And he usually did. This book (and his two others on NYC, Weegee's People and The Village) depict what life was like in Gotham's dark days. Full of mob hit crime photos (which he admits he rearranged for better composition), blistering heat waves, record colds, wild New Years' and tear-jerking poverty shots, these photographic masterpieces are gems for photo buffs, fans of 50's culture or anyone who's ever been to or dreamt of visiting the rotten apple. If pictures are worth a thousand words, this book is an encyclopedia collection. Also check out a movie called "Public (or is it private?) Eye", based on Weegee's myth for a much-needed history lesson.
